Ann- Margaret Mercier, LMFT
Ann-Margaret Mercier is a licensed marriage and family therapist (LMFT #159007) who earned her Master of Arts in Clinical Psychology from Pepperdine University. She specializes in the treatment of obsessive-compulsive and anxiety-based conditions in children, adolescents, and adults. Although she operates from a person-centered framework, her work draws primarily from cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), particularly exposure and response prevention (ERP) and acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT). She also incorporates mindfulness-based strategies and has additional training in inference-based CBT (I-CBT) and SPACE (Supportive Parenting for Anxious Childhood Emotions).
Much of Ann-Margaret’s early clinical experience centered on treating moderate-to-severe OCD at the intensive outpatient (IOP) level at The Gateway Institute in Costa Mesa. During this time, she worked closely with individuals and families across a range of treatment settings, providing psychoeducation and support to families and guiding in-vivo exposures in home, public, and virtual environments. She also gained experience working with out-of-state and international clients seeking intensive treatment in California.
Ann-Margaret collaborates with clients to provide both practical tools and empathic understanding, helping them not only to navigate anxiety and OCD, but to reclaim parts of life that fear and uncertainty may have narrowed. She offers compassionate, ethical, and individualized support informed by both clinical research and lived human experience. Ann-Margaret values creativity and flexibility in treatment, taking into account each client’s unique background, values, developmental stage, and personal history.
Prior to pursuing a career in psychotherapy, Ann-Margaret studied English literature in Scotland at The University of St Andrews and The University of Edinburgh. She considers herself a lifelong learner and loves diving into topics that interest her — ranging from OCD, trauma, and ethics to subjects beyond clinical practice, including children’s literature, history, and social psychology. In her free time, she enjoys reading, traveling, and managing a scholarship program she founded that serves graduating high school seniors who have overcome personal adversity. She especially values time spent with her husband, daughter, and their three long-haired cats.
